Who Is a Good Candidate for Dentures?
Most patients with healthy gums and solid jawbone density can be considered candidates for dentures. If you often experience difficulty speaking, digestive issues, or feel embarrassed about your smile, these prosthetics could offer relief. However, the only way to be sure you’re prepared is by scheduling a consultation with our dental team. Your dentist will give your mouth a complete examination and discuss your options with you before helping you decide which path to take.
Types of Dentures
Whether you’re missing a few teeth or an entire arch, we can create a customized solution for you. Dentures are a far more versatile treatment than many patients realize, offering multiple styles and materials to meet different needs. During your consultation, your dentist will explore these options with you and help you select the best combination to keep your smile happy and healthy.
Partial Dentures
Over time, teeth adjacent to large gaps will shift slightly to compensate. This can cause your bite to become misaligned and increase your risk of dental damage. Partial dentures are affixed via metal clasps that grip your natural teeth. The dentures then fill the gaps keeping your smile aligned.
Full Dentures
Even if you’re missing all your teeth, dentures can keep your grin looking natural and feeling great. The smooth base of these dentures, often made from acrylic, uses natural suction to stay in place. Each piece is custom-fitted to your mouth, providing ultimate comfort.
Implant Dentures
Implant dentures are the next evolution in traditional denture technology. These prosthetics use dental implants, small titanium rods inserted into your jawbone, as an anchor. This keeps them fixed in place and continues to stimulate your jawbone as you chew. Not only will this keep your dentures from slipping, but it will also help your face keep its youthful shape.
The Benefits of Dentures
No matter which type of dentures you choose, they will be customized for your unique oral anatomy to meet your needs. Some of the great benefits of dentures include:
- The ability to eat more nutritious meals.
- Keeping your smile intact and looking natural.
- Enhancing your confidence and self-esteem.
- Providing support for your lips and cheeks for a fuller appearance.
- Keeping your oral care routine easy and convenient.

Denture FAQs
Can I Use Regular Toothpaste to Clean My Dentures?
No, using regular toothpaste is not recommended. The reason for this is simple: it contains abrasive ingredients that can scratch the surface of your dentures, dulling their appearance over time. That’s why we recommend using hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid as well as a soft-bristle toothbrush. Then, before you go to bed in the evening, place your denture in a clean container filled with water or a dentist-approved cleaning solution.
What Should You Do if Your Dentures Break?
Whether there is a small chip in the surface, there is a long crack running down the side, or your dentures have split into multiple pieces, the best thing to do is schedule an emergency appointment with our Renton dental team. The sooner you do, the sooner we can determine if we can replace it at our office. If that’s not an option, then we can either send it to the artisans at the lab or begin the process of having a new one made.
How Can I Reduce the Cost of Dentures?
Fortunately, many dental insurance providers cover a portion of the cost of dentures. Plus, if you are uninsured, you can break up the total cost into smaller, more budget-friendly chunks with CareCredit. During your consultation, we can provide you with a price estimate and discuss the different financial solutions that are available in-depth. We’ll also answer any questions you have so you can focus on getting the care you need instead of stressing about the cost!
Should I Have All My Teeth Pulled to Get Dentures?
There are some cases when preliminary treatments, like tooth extractions, are necessary. For example, if one or more of your teeth are damaged beyond the point of repair, then we need to remove them before having your custom denture made. With all of that said, we don’t recommend having healthy teeth removed simply to make room for your new restoration. If the remaining teeth you have can be saved with a tooth-colored filling, dental crown, or root canal, then that’s what we will do!
Can I Sleep with My Dentures?
Although sleeping with your dentures may seem harmless, it can restrict circulation to your gums, cause bad breath, and put you at a higher risk of pneumonia. For all of those reasons, we recommend getting in the habit of taking them off before going to bed. While you sleep, we recommend placing them in a clean glass filled with water or a denture cleaner.
What Can’t You Eat with Dentures?
Since peanut butter, caramel-filled candies, and other sticky foods can pull your denture out of place, we recommend steering clear of them. For the same reason, you should limit your intake of crunchy foods, like hard pretzels, croutons, and raw almonds. Instead, fill your plate with nutrient-dense foods that are easier to chew (i.e., cottage cheese, cooked carrots, fresh strawberries, plain yogurt).
